From August through June, Washington, DC averages 95 days of precipitation, which means that students currently forego outdoor recess on about one-third of their school days. Tyler students participated in the 2013 SunWise sun safety SHADE poster contest, which inspired the proposed “play port.” Tyler would create a covered outdoor play port featuring a large (30’ x 40’) awning over a patio for more days of outdoor recess and physical education on these hot or rainy days.
