Our Future of Learning Together: Bilingual-Arts Programming at Tyler Elementary School

Beginning in the 2023-2024 School Year, Tyler Elementary will integrate the current Creative Arts and Dual Language Spanish Immersion Programs to offer a unified, Bilingual-Arts program beginning with grades PK3 and PK4.

The Bilingual-Arts program design will afford increased access to high-quality, bilingual, and arts-integrated instruction for all learners. The Special Education program at Tyler — inclusion and self-contained Communication and Education Supports (CES) classrooms — will remain unchanged.

What is Bilingual-Arts?

The newly integrated Bilingual-Arts program at Tyler Elementary will increase students’ bilingual/biliteracy development and provide them visual and performing arts instruction across multiple genres and styles. Understanding the need for students to operate with self-awareness and mutual respect in today’s 21st century global community, Tyler students will explore their own unique identities through the multidimensional lens of language and culture studies. Students will also understand academic concepts through creative strategies in art, music, and drama. Tyler Elementary will leverage community partnerships and resources to further enrich students’ holistic, learning experiences.

  • DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM

The Dual Language program at Tyler began in the fall of 2005 and now runs from preschool through the 5th grade. Dual Language students develop flexibility in thinking through problem solving, conceptualizing, and reasoning in two languages.

    VISION

The Tyler Elementary Dual Language Program strives to:

Develop open-minded students who are bilingual and biliterate and are passionate about reaching high academic standards in both English and Spanish.

Nurture students to be confident in their ability to communicate and comprehend in both languages.

Grow collaborative students that have a deep appreciation for the Spanish language and Hispanic/ Latino culture.

    MISSION

At Tyler Elementary Dual Language Program mission is to:

Base our instructional practices in sound Dual Language pedagogy

Align instruction, behavioral expectations and level of rigor across classrooms and languages

Provide robust academic instruction for both languages in all domains: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, and Math

Provide access to rich bilingual resources and experiences

Open communication and inclusion of all families

    PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The students in the Tyler Elementary Dual Language Program are majority Spanish Language learners.

In Pre-K, students experience a 90/10 Spanish immersion model where the majority of instruction occurs in Spanish with the exception of Special classes (Art, PE, Music, Media, and Health).

This year there have been changes to the schedule for grade K-5 to allow for stronger horizontal and vertical alignment across the program.

In grades K-2 students receive all content in both languages in a 50/50 dual language model. This means that student will receive 50% of their instruction in Spanish and 50% of their instruction in English. Students rotate classes every other day so that they spend a full day the in the target language. Teachers deliberately collaborate with each other and intentionally bridge content and language. Students receive both English and Spanish phonics daily. Minimizing the transitions between languages is ideal for younger students lessening the cognitive load and increasing the predictability of the schedule, environment, and language.

In grades 3-5 instruction is departmentalized, with some subjects in English & some in Spanish.

Dual-language programs are the most effective types of learning for nurturing bilingual/biliterate students. Tyler’s program helps them to develop linguistic competence in both languages at the same time (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).

Studying in two languages allows students to transfer knowledge and skills acquired in one language to the other. They are able to feel comfortable and successful in one language while gradually building the second language.

By continuing to learn and develop using two languages, children’s educational and cognitive development are enhanced. Learning in two languages provides students with access to 2 groups of literature, an opening to diverse traditions, ideas, and ways of thinking which can lead to open mindedness, flexibility, and an ability to think in a different way.

  • SPECIAL EDUCATION

Tyler Elementary strives to be a school that is inclusive, compassionate, and connected. In addition to addressing the unique concerns of a Spanish Immersion program and an Arts Integration curriculum, Tyler offers a Special Education program that accommodates a variety of students depending on their individual needs.

CES classrooms have a low student to teacher ratio to ensure individualized attention. For further information about specialized programs within DCPS, please visit the Division of Specialized Instruction Resource Guide.

CES program classrooms are for students who have been identified with autism spectrum disorder or other types of learning needs. The CES classrooms are based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and use research-based practices derived from the science of learning and behavior . The CES program integrates an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) instructional framework, which includes a variety of teaching approaches rooted in the science of learning and behavior. We place a strong emphasis on promoting independence, honoring all forms of communication, and empowering a neurodiverse community within our classrooms and broader school environment.

Teachers and staff in these classrooms support the academic, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional needs of students to help them develop independent life skills. Within the ABA model, CES classrooms are supported by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

Additionally, all special education students have access to part-time inclusion during their specials classes (Art, Music, P.E. & Library) to develop and generalize skills among their general education peers.

Students in general education classrooms may also receive specialized instruction hours via their IEP, as well. Through a co-teaching model, special education teachers work with general education teachers to meet a students’ needs.

As a community, Tyler works to provide all students with the most appropriate environment based on their individualized needs to ensure their success academically, socially, and globally.
